JPEG THUMBNAILS

The images below are in order a colour mean thumbnail image of Clown, a JPEG version of such a thumb, (actually it was slightly altered by error diffusion) and the original Clown image. The "exploded" images of each thumbnail have been magnified using your browser - for Netscape 3.0 the explosion has been done by replication, each pixel in thumb replaced by 4x4 copies. If your workstation is not set for 24-bit colour, what you see is probably dithered, and the differences between the two thumbs, such as splotches of red in the hair to left and the disturbed highlighting of the nose in the JPEG thumb, are probably not visible even in the exploded versions.
